Should You Use a Mouthguard at Night?

Pair of clear mouth guards placed on a black background, commonly used for bruxism or teeth protection.Do you wake up with a sore jaw or a headache that just won't quit? Maybe your teeth feel sensitive, or your partner complains about you grinding your teeth at night. If any of this sounds familiar, you might benefit from using a mouthguard while you sleep. Let's explore why!

What is a Mouthguard and Why Use One?

A mouthguard is a protective device worn in the mouth to cover the teeth, typically made of plastic. Think of it like a helmet for your teeth. While athletes use them during sports to prevent injury from impact, mouthguards have another important role to play: protecting your teeth from the damaging effects of nighttime teeth grinding, also known as bruxism.

The Problem of Bruxism

Many people grind or clench their teeth at night, often without even realizing it. This involuntary habit can put tremendous pressure on your teeth, jaws, and surrounding muscles. Over time, bruxism can lead to a variety of problems, including:

•  Headaches and jaw pain
•  Tooth sensitivity and wear
•  Chipped, cracked, or flattened teeth
•  Damage to fillings, crowns, and other restoration dentistry work
•  Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders

How a Mouthguard Helps

A mouthguard acts as a cushion between your upper and lower teeth, preventing them from grinding directly against each other. This reduces the pressure on your teeth and jaw, alleviating the symptoms of bruxism and preventing further damage.

Types of Mouthguards

There are different types of mouthguards available:

•  Over-the-counter: These are pre-made and can be purchased at most drugstores. They are the least expensive option, but often provide the least comfortable and effective fit.
•  Boil-and-bite: These mouthguards are also available over-the-counter. You heat them in hot water, then bite down on them to mold them to your teeth. They offer a slightly better fit than pre-made mouthguards, but can still be bulky and uncomfortable.
•  Custom-fitted: These mouthguards are made by your dentist specifically for your mouth. A mold is taken of your teeth, and the mouthguard is fabricated in a dental lab. Custom-fitted mouthguards provide the best fit, comfort, and protection. They are the most expensive option but are generally considered the most effective for managing bruxism.

Oral Care and Mouthguards

Maintaining good oral care is essential when using a mouthguard. Be sure to clean your mouthguard regularly with soap and water or a mouthguard cleaner to prevent the buildup of bacteria. Store it in a clean, ventilated container when not in use.

Is a Mouthguard Right for You?

If you suspect you might be grinding your teeth at night, or if you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, talk to your dentist. They can evaluate your teeth and jaw, determine if you have bruxism, and recommend the best type of mouthguard for your needs. A mouthguard is a simple and effective way to protect your teeth and improve your overall oral health, contributing to a lifetime of healthy smiles and reducing the need for extensive restoration dentistry later on.
