Inlays and Onlays

A dental onlay being fitted onto a prepared tooth, demonstrating the restoration process. When teeth have suffered from tooth decay or cavities, there are a few different restorative dental procedures which can help. While most people realize that fillings are often used to treat cavities, there are other applications as well. For instance, fillings can also address improper spacing between teeth.

Inlays and Onlays

There are different types of fillings, each one chosen for different reasons. The most common are the inlay and the onlay filling. With smaller cavities, which are considered minor in the dental health world, the inlay is more than adequate to repair the cavity. However, for those cavities where the damage is quite extensive, the best choice of filling is the onlay. According to the American Dental Association, in order for the damage to be considered extensive, it means the damage extends beyond the tooth cusp and down into the root. Each type of filling requires the decay of the cavity be removed first before being placed.

Patients who need to have fillings placed should come in to see us at Brian K. Dennis, DDS to find out more.

How Long Will Fillings Last?

The life expectancy of an inlay or onlay usually depends on the type of material they are made of. The first inlays and onlays were made of gold. Having them made of gold is still an option, however more often porcelain is chosen as the material used nowadays. Porcelain can be tinted to match the other teeth in the patient's mouth. Gold is still the most durable and lasts the longest. Also, gold fillings typically strengthen teeth up to 75%. Gold fillings can typically last up to 30 years because they do not erode easily. We can provide you with an assessment to determine which type of filling would best meet your needs.

Inlays and Onlays vs. Crowns

When a patient has significant erosion and decay problems, a filling is the first solution considered, however, there are other solutions available. One of those alternatives is a crown. When a crown is placed, portions of the damaged tooth have to be removed in order to make room for the crown, so the patient's biting motion does not change. With inlays and onlays that does not have to happen.

When Do I Need Inlays and Onlays?

No matter how or why teeth were damaged, be it decay or disease or trauma, inlays and onlays can help restore the damaged tooth to normal. If you have a small chip or a minor cavity, the inlay filling is the best bet to repair the damage. However, if the damage is significant, with either a substantial cavity or a big chip, then an onlay will likely be recommended.
