Porcelain Crowns

When the chewing surfaces have become badly eroded, porcelain crowns can restore the tooth and its functionality. Dental crowns are helpful in repairing fractures and chips, and even help with discolored patches in tooth enamel. Every attempt is made in treating patients to keep their natural teeth because when a tooth is lost, it can create a domino effect of additional problems and concerns which might warrant additional procedures to correct.

What is a Crown?

A crown is a small cap-like dental appliance which is placed on top of the tooth to cover the chewing surface. While they can be made from a variety of materials, most commonly, crowns are made from either metal or porcelain. The most popular type is porcelain. Porcelain can be tinted to match the color of the patient's other teeth so it blends in naturally.

If you are in need of a crown and want to find out more about them, why not contact our Brian K. Dennis, DDS office to find out the details?

When Do I Need to Get a Crown?

Anyone who is dealing with advanced tooth decay or badly eroded teeth can benefit from having a crown placement. Over our lifetime, our teeth slowly weaken and can become decayed or damaged. A crown can help to strengthen those weakened teeth and help to retain the patient's natural teeth. Porcelain crowns can also be used to cover discolored sections of teeth, as well as provide a permanent artificial tooth solution for dental implants.

Why Is Porcelain Used for Crowns?

Porcelain is always the material of choice when it comes to crowns. It is the most often chosen material because it can be tinted or colored to match the color of the patient's remaining teeth. It can also be shaped and sized so it blends right in. When taken care of, porcelain crowns can last for decades.

What is Involved in Having a Crown Placed?

Crown placement procedures take two appointments to complete. At the first office visit, we will do x-rays to make sure the bone structure can support a crown. We will also prepare the site by removing diseased tissue. We will then go over the treatment plan for the actual placement of the crown and schedule the next appointment. At the second appointment, we will place the crown on the tooth in need of treatment.

Lifespan of a Crown

Once the crown is placed, patients should continue to remain diligent in their flossing and brushing routines. This will not only maintain the health of the oral cavity but will also make sure the crown is kept clean and free of damaging bacteria.
