Root Canal Root canals are one of the most widely performed procedures in the dental community. A root canal requires two office visits to complete, but once finished will alleviate all symptoms associated with the tooth in question. This means those patients suffering from tooth pain and who are struggling to eat can have restored functionality without the pain. Why not come see us at Brian K. Dennis, DDS and let us evaluate your situation to determine if a root canal is warranted?Root Canal ProcedureThe biggest key to having a successful root canal performed is the removal of all dead tissue, bacteria, and plaque from the site. If any bacteria remain, it can easily set it after the root canal procedure is completed and attack the repaired tooth by infiltrating the pulp and the dentin. This infection could potentially result in tooth loss. Using a numbing agent which we generously apply to the tooth and gum, we numb the patient, so they do not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. We will employ what is known as a dental dam which helps to keep the damaged tooth clean and dry throughout the surgical procedure. Drills are employed, exposing the interior of the tooth so the infection can be completely removed. The dentin and pulp are removed if infected, so no decayed or damaged tissue is left behind. One this has occurred, we push the resin into the cleared-out chamber and then seal it up. A filling is placed temporarily to help protect the tooth before the permanent crown comes in. Root Canal Recovery GuidelinesIn the first seven days following a root canal it is important to watch what type of food you are eating. Do not eat any hard foods, chew ice, or chew on items like pen caps or fingernails. Let the tooth fully heal by being diligent in these things. It is strongly recommended that all patients continue to maintain their oral health practices of brushing and flossing twice a day and visiting our office for regular cleanings and exams. Flossing and brushing twice a day will help keep the damaging bacteria in check so it does not damage the repaired tooth. A tooth is restored to good health following a root canal and can remain healthy for years afterward. Let Us Repair Your ToothCome see us at Brian K.
