Same-Day Crowns (CEREC)
in Albuquerque, NM

Dentist explaining a same-day crown procedure to a female patient using a digital 3D imaging screen in a modern dental office. If you need a dental crown in Albuquerque, NM and would rather not spend two appointments and a couple of weeks in a temporary, Brian K. Dennis, DDS offers same-day crowns using CEREC technology. Same-day crowns let us scan, design, mill, and bond a custom ceramic crown in a single visit, often in about two hours of total chair time. For patients with busy schedules, or anyone who has worn a temporary crown before and isn’t eager to do it again, this is usually the easier path.

The technology has been part of restorative dentistry for decades, but the materials and software have improved substantially in recent years. Modern same-day crowns use the same high-quality ceramic blocks that lab-made restorations are milled from, and the digital design process gives our team precise control over fit, contact points, and the way the crown matches the color and translucency of the teeth around it. As the only AACD Accredited Dentist in Albuquerque, Dr. Brian K. Dennis brings the same eye for cosmetic detail to a same-day crown that he brings to veneer cases.

That said, same-day isn’t the right answer for every case. Some teeth, particularly back molars under heavy bite force or cases where the gum tissue needs time to heal first, still benefit from a lab-fabricated crown. We’ll talk through which approach fits your tooth at your consultation.

What Is a Same-Day Crown?

A high-tech dental scanner used for designing same-day crowns with a 3D model displayed on a monitor.A same-day crown is a custom ceramic restoration that we design, mill, and bond in a single appointment using CEREC technology. The crown itself looks and functions just like a traditional dental crown; what changes is the path to getting it into your mouth. Instead of a goopy impression, a temporary crown, and a two-week wait while a lab fabricates the final piece, we capture a digital scan, design the crown on a chairside computer, and mill it from a solid ceramic block while you wait.

The result is a permanent restoration ready to be bonded the same day. There is no second appointment, no temporary crown that can come loose at an inconvenient time, and no need to numb the tooth twice. For most patients who need a single crown, this is meaningfully more convenient than the traditional process.

How CEREC Compares to a Lab-Made Crown

The honest answer is that both approaches can produce excellent crowns, and the right choice depends on the tooth. Same-day ceramic crowns work very well for the majority of single-tooth cases, particularly premolars and front teeth where esthetics matter and bite force is moderate. Lab-fabricated crowns, including porcelain crowns layered by a ceramist, can be the better option for complex multi-unit cases, certain heavy-bite molar situations, or when a layered esthetic effect is needed for a front tooth that has to match adjacent veneers. We’ll be straight with you about which approach we’d recommend for your tooth.

CEREC also covers other indirect restorations besides crowns. Same-day inlays and onlays are made the same way and follow the same workflow.

Are You a Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?

Most patients who need a crown for a cracked tooth, a large failing filling, a tooth that has had a root canal, or a tooth with significant decay are good candidates for a same-day approach. The main factors we evaluate are the amount of remaining healthy tooth structure, the position of the tooth in your bite, and the condition of the surrounding gum tissue. If you grind or clench heavily, we’ll talk through whether a same-day ceramic is the best fit or whether a different material makes more sense for your case.

Your Same-Day Crown Dentist in Albuquerque

Dr. Brian K. Dennis has practiced restorative and cosmetic dentistry in Albuquerque for more than 30 years and is the only AACD Accredited Dentist in the city. AACD accreditation is a rigorous credential that requires submission of clinical case work for peer review and demonstrates a high standard for color matching, contour, and the way restorations integrate with adjacent teeth. That eye matters on a crown, especially on a tooth anyone will see when you smile.

Dr. Dennis earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota in 1983 and completed an Advanced General Dentistry Residency there the following year. He serves as visiting faculty at Spear Education in Scottsdale, where he helps teach other dentists in courses involving facially-generated treatment planning and occlusion. Both topics matter directly to crown work. Dr. Dennis often spends extra time at the design stage matching the bite contacts and the line angles of adjacent teeth, since those are the details that decide whether a crown disappears or always feels a little off.

The Same-Day Crown Process at Our Office

1. Numbing and Tooth Preparation

We numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue with local anesthesia before any work begins. Once you’re comfortable, we remove decay or old filling material and shape the tooth so the new crown will fit precisely. This part of the visit is the same whether you’re getting a same-day crown or a traditional one.

2. Digital Scan

Instead of taking a putty impression, we use an intraoral scanner to capture a precise three-dimensional model of the prepared tooth, the adjacent teeth, and your bite. The scan takes a few minutes and is far more comfortable than the impression trays many patients remember from years past.

3. Crown Design

On a chairside computer, we design the crown to match the contours, contact points, and bite of the original tooth. We select a ceramic block in the shade and translucency that match your surrounding teeth. For a front tooth, this is where the AACD-trained eye for cosmetic detail does most of its work.

4. Milling

The milling unit carves the crown from the chosen ceramic block, usually in 15 to 30 minutes. You’re welcome to stay in the chair, read, work on your phone, or step into the reception area while the crown is being made. Dr. Dennis reviews the design on the chairside computer before milling begins, so adjustments happen before the block is cut rather than after.

5. Try-In and Bonding

Once the crown is finished, Dr. Dennis polishes it, glazes it for the final esthetic match, checks the fit and your bite, and bonds it to the prepared tooth with dental adhesive. He makes any final adjustments, walks you through aftercare, and you leave with a permanent restoration the same day.

Benefits of Same-Day Crowns

Same-day crowns aren’t just about saving you a trip. The single-visit workflow has clinical and practical advantages, particularly when the dentist designs the crown personally rather than handing the case off to an off-site lab.

•  Dr. Dennis Designs Your Crown Personally – The chairside design step happens in front of you, not after a lab technician interprets a mailed-in impression. Dr. Dennis adjusts contours, contact points, and shade in real time before the milling unit cuts a single block.
•  One Visit Instead of Two – The full workflow happens in our Albuquerque office in a single appointment. No second numbing visit, no second drive in, no waiting two weeks for the lab.
•  No Temporary Crown to Worry About – Temporaries can come loose, feel rough on the tongue, or pop off the night before a meeting. Same-day crowns skip that phase, which means one less thing that can go wrong between visits.
•  AACD-Level Color Matching – As the only AACD Accredited Dentist in Albuquerque, Dr. Dennis pays close attention to how a crown matches the teeth around it, particularly on a tooth that shows when you smile. We choose a ceramic block in a shade and translucency that work with your specific anatomy.
•  Comfortable Digital Impression – The intraoral scan replaces the putty impression tray. Patients with a sensitive gag reflex or a history of struggling with impressions tell us this is the part of the visit they expected to dread but didn’t.

For a front tooth where esthetics are the top priority, the chairside design step gives Dr. Dennis a direct way to fine-tune the result before the crown leaves the milling unit. For a back tooth where function matters most, the same-day workflow gets you back to chewing normally without the temporary phase.

Why Choose Our Practice for Same-Day Crowns in Albuquerque

Same-day crown technology is widely available now, and the milling unit alone doesn’t decide the outcome. At Brian K. Dennis, DDS, Dr. Dennis sits at the chairside computer himself and designs each crown in front of you. The hands-on design step is where 30 years of restorative work shows up in the final result.

Dr. Dennis is the only AACD Accredited Dentist in Albuquerque. Earning that credential involved submitting a portfolio of clinical work for peer review against a national standard for color matching, contour, and esthetic integration. That same standard applies to every crown that leaves our office, whether it is a back-molar restoration after years of wear or a front tooth where the color match has to be invisible.

Our office has used digital scanning and chairside CAD/CAM for years. Combined with our cone beam CT and digital impression workflow, we have a full suite of digital tools that supports same-day cases as well as more complex treatment planning when a tooth needs a different approach. Our team will tell you honestly when a same-day crown is the right answer and when it isn’t.

Beyond the technology and credentials, our practice has served Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe patients for over 30 years. Most of the patients we see today come to us through a referral from someone we’ve treated before, and that’s a standard we work hard to keep.

Same-Day Crown Cost and Financing

Cost matters, and we’ll be straight with you about what affects it. The fee for a same-day crown depends on which tooth needs the restoration, how much existing tooth structure remains, the ceramic block selected, and whether any preparatory work like a buildup is required. The exam and any necessary imaging are part of figuring out the right plan for your tooth.

In most cases, dental insurance treats a CEREC crown the same as it would a lab-fabricated crown for coverage purposes, since the final restoration is functionally equivalent. We’re happy to verify your benefits before you schedule and give you a clear cost estimate based on your specific plan. Flexible payment options are also available so you can move forward without putting the work off.

For an accurate estimate for your tooth, give our Albuquerque office a call. We’ll walk you through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a same-day crown appointment take?

Most same-day crown visits at our Albuquerque office take about two hours from start to finish, including the milling time. That is longer than a single traditional crown appointment, but shorter than the two appointments and intervening weeks the lab process requires. If you have a complex case or need additional procedures alongside the crown, we will let you know in advance so you can plan your day.

Are CEREC crowns as strong as lab-made crowns?

Yes, for the great majority of cases. The ceramic blocks used for CEREC are engineered to handle normal chewing forces and last for many years with proper care. The strength difference between a CEREC ceramic and a comparable lab-fabricated ceramic is usually not the deciding factor; tooth position and bite force are. After 30 years of restoring teeth in Albuquerque, Dr. Dennis can usually tell at the first exam whether your specific tooth would benefit from a different material.

Will my same-day crown match my other teeth?

In most cases, yes. We choose a ceramic block in a shade and translucency that match the teeth around the restoration, and we can fine-tune characterization during the design phase before milling. As the only AACD Accredited Dentist in Albuquerque, Dr. Dennis pays close attention to esthetic detail on visible teeth. For especially demanding front-tooth color matches that require layered porcelain, a lab-fabricated approach can sometimes be a better fit, and we will discuss that with you before deciding.

Does dental insurance cover same-day crowns?

Most dental plans cover a CEREC crown under the same diagnostic code and at the same percentage they cover a traditional lab-fabricated crown. Annual maximums and remaining benefits often determine your out-of-pocket more than the type of crown does. We can verify your specific benefits before you schedule, so you are not guessing about cost.

How long do same-day crowns last?

With good home care and regular checkups, most same-day ceramic crowns last 10 to 15 years or longer, similar to a lab-fabricated ceramic crown. Longevity depends more on bite force, grinding habits, and oral hygiene than on whether the crown was milled in our office or made off-site. For patients who clench, Dr. Dennis often recommends a custom night guard, which meaningfully extends the life of any crown.

Will the crown procedure hurt?

We fully numb the tooth and surrounding gum tissue with local anesthesia before any preparation begins, so you should not feel pain during the procedure itself. Some patients have mild sensitivity for a few days after the crown is bonded, particularly if the tooth was already inflamed before treatment. Persistent or severe sensitivity beyond the first week or two is uncommon and worth a follow-up call.

Can I get a same-day crown after a root canal?

In most cases, yes. A tooth that has had a root canal almost always needs a crown to protect the remaining structure, and CEREC is well-suited to that situation since the tooth is already prepared. In our office, we typically place a buildup first if a significant amount of structure is missing, then proceed with the same-day crown workflow in the same visit.

Why choose Brian K. Dennis, DDS for a same-day crown in Albuquerque?
