Tooth Extractions

Some patients may become nervous about the thought of having a tooth pulled. They can rest assured, with the use of modern sedation dentistry techniques they will not feel anything other than pressure during the procedure. Exodontia is the technical name for tooth extraction. It does not matter if the patient has incurred a severe injury to their face or mouth causing a tooth to be cracked or chipped, or if the tooth is suffering from decay and disease, extractions can safely remove the tooth and keep the decay and disease from spreading to other healthy teeth and healthy tissue.

While extractions are performed with regularity, they are reserved for the last resort. At Brian K. Dennis, DDS we do everything in our power to avoid removing the tooth because once removed a whole host of other issues will need to be addressed. The jawbone can weaken when a tooth is extracted because the tooth opposite doesn't have any opposition force when it bites down. When this happens, the jawbone will begin to deteriorate.

If you have a tooth causing you pain or have noticed discoloration along the gums, why not come in to let us examine the tooth to see if it needs to be extracted?

Types of Tooth Extractions

There are two main types of extractions. They both involve slowly working the tooth loose before pulling it from the supportive gum structure.

The most frequently used is the simple extraction. It is straightforward and desensitizes the area using a numbing agent on both the gums and the tooth to make sure the patient does not feel any discomfort.

The second type of extraction is known as a surgical extraction and is generally considered when a patient's teeth haven't erupted correctly and remain at least partially embedded in the jawbone. When a tooth does not erupt in the right way, it can put undue stress on other teeth in the oral cavity, making them shift to take over the empty space. If a tooth is designated as too difficult to extract, it might be broken up into several smaller pieces to aid in extraction. This happens frequently while removing wisdom teeth.

With advancements in sedation dentistry, patients are relaxed and comfortable during the procedure, not feeling any pain or discomfort.

Extractions and Recovery

The typical length of recovery for an extraction is a few days. Usually, with just anti-inflammatory medication, the patient can go back to their normal diet within just a few days.

Regardless of why patients need an extraction, we can perform the procedure quickly and easily, usually in a single 30-minute appointment. Contact Brian K. Dennis, DDS at 505-292-1051 if you have questions, or to schedule an appointment.
